Land, Piety, Peoplehood
by Richard K. MacMaster
paper, 344 pages, $19.95
Richard K. MacMaster follows the Mennonite migration to the New World and analyzes the ecomonic, social, political, and religious forces which drove these people out of the Old World into America. Mac Master paints a portrait of the lives of the early American Mennonite people: Their wealth, migration patterns, social structures, family patterns, and changing attitudes toward education. He traces the influence of such movements as Pietism on these people and shows how they fit into the total context of colonial and revolutionary America. Volume 1.

James C. Juhnke explores the story of Mennonites and Amish in America from 1890 to 1930. He reveals how Mennonites responded to the challenges of war as well as doctrinal and cultural changes.

Mennonites in American Society, 1930-1970
by Paul Toews
paper, 448 pages, $19.95
This volume provides a rich interpretive story of how Mennonites have preserved their identity through the 20th century.

Paul Toews examines ways progressive Mennonites have slowed their absorption into American culture through creating institutional systems, refining and rearticulating ideologies, building ecumenical alliances, and developing a service and missional activism. Meanwhile, the Amish have formed a creative set of adaptive strategies that permit economic integration and social isolation.

An in-depth look at how Mennonites nad Amish were able to become a more visible and respected people than ever before during their more than 300 years in America. Volume 4.

Can a Christian conscientiously take part in a modern war, a war that would undoubtedly result in the utter annihilation of tens of thousands of innocent persons--possibly a large part of the entire human rase? There have been numerous books and propaganda pamphlets issued on this subject. Most of them are not Biblical in viewpoint.

It is the Biblical realism of this book that makes it such a deep and prophetic contribution to the subject. Christian theology should start from the scriptures.

The possibility of a nuclear holocaust has brought humankind into a radically new, unprecedented, and unanticipated religious situation. Gordon D. Kaufman offers a cogent and original analysis of this predicament, outlining specific proposals for reconceiving the central concerns and symbols of Christian faith. He beings with an account of a visit to the Peace Park in the rebuilt city of Hiroshima. Reflecting upon this experience, Kaufman foresees that further use of nuclear weapons will result not in rebuilding but in annihilation of the human enterprise.

How has the Mennonite Church, now part of MC USA, changed in regard to it's beliefs and practices about peace over the past 100 years? How has it remained the same? Ervin Stutzman shows how the church moved over the past century from an emphasis on nonresistance and nonconformity to engage in advocacy for peace and justice. At the same time, Stutzman presses for a greater emphasis on the way that God's activity must guide our work in the world, arguing for a stronger link between God's grace, justice, and peace. What does peace smell like? What does it taste like? Feel, sound or look like? Through Sensing Peace, children ages 4 to 7 are encouraged to see what peace looks, sounds, feels, tastes and smells like through their everyday moments-things like laughing, cooking, gardening, singing or sharing ice cream.

Through this encouraging and delightful story, children will realize that peace isn't something big and mysterious out there that only adults know about or can do-they already experience and create peace in meaningful ways each day.

Are children safe at your church? Have you taken any precautions to ensure they won't be abused? What should you do if you suspect a child in your church or neighborhood is being abused and neglected? Do you know for certain that volunteers who work with children don't have criminal backgrounds?

In the contest of the Bible and faith, Jeanette Harder provides Christians with answers to these and other questions. Along the way she helps us learn how to end child abuse and neglect in church, home, families, neighborhood, school, and work. Each chapter contains real-life stories, discussion questions, and actions items; the appendix includes prayers, reading and exercises for use in adult education.
